7.5 miles northeast of Winchester, and 12 miles southeast of Alton, is the market town and civil parish of New Alresford. Visitors described the town as a vision of pastel perfections. Rich in history, evidence of occupancy dates as far back as the Neolithic Bronze and Iron Age. Considered the capital of watercress farming, the town takes it very seriously.
On the third Sunday in May, the town of New Alresford hosts The Watercress Festival. With free entry, it attracts crowds by the numbers who expect street markets, celebrity chefs, and demonstrations. The Festival creates an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the town. The best way to do this is going on the Millennium Trail. This is a self-guided tour that begins at the end of Broad Street and takes you along the River Itchen tributary from Alresford pond. From the nature reserve, visitors will walk to the Eel House, an eel capture sluice house and museum.
If you’re setting up a stall at The Watercress Festival, we’ll assist you in the self storage you need for your belongings before or afterwards. Providing removal and storage, we guarantee that our storage facilities will keep your effects dry, clean, and safe for when you need them.
Though small in size, there are a few annual and bi-annual activities residents and vacationers enjoy. Organised by the Rotary Club in November is the Bonfire Night. Visitors and locals enjoy a torchlit procession from Broad Street, along West Street up Pond Hill to end up at Arlebury Park. Following is a spectacular fireworks display.
Every two years in Summer there’s The Duck Race, an event organised by the Alresford Pigs Association. Amongst decoy ducks in the race are 32 ducks that compete with them. Held on the lawns of Weir House, there are all sorts of fete activities. A live band plays while visitors enjoy tea and cake, beer, and for the kids, a jumping castle.
The newly reopened restaurant, The Globe, provides a tranquil riverside eating experience. Located at 20 The Stoke, Alresford. Also on the banks of the River Itchen in Ovington, Alresford is The Bush Inn. They offer pub classics with meat, game, and poultry sourced locally.
From riverside walks, shopping at specialist shops, or enjoying afternoon tea at a tea shop - there’s something at every turn in New Alresford.
