The villages and hamlets of High Beach, Holyfield, Sewardstone, and Upshire are part of the Waltham Abbey parish. It’s known for the beautiful parish church, the Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross and St Lawrence, which dates back to the 600s. The Abbey is the resting site of King Harold, who was killed in the Battle of Hastings. The town is also rich in other historical sites. History buffs will want to explore the Royal Gunpowder Mills, located in 170 acres of natural parkland on Beaulieu Drive. It has been an active windmill for more than 300 years, and it is the only site to have survived virtually intact.
The gardens at Copped Hall, a restored Georgian mansion, are also sure to delight. And after a long day touring the town’s many sights, be sure to stop off at the Welsh Harp on Market Square for a tasty pub dinner. The half-timbered inn dates from the 15th century.
The town nestles in the scenic countryside between the Epping Forest and the banks of the River Lea. Head into the forest to listen to the local birdlife, and you may even be lucky enough to spot some of the area’s famous deer. The Wildlife Discovery Centre is a popular spot for nature lovers. Closer to the Abbey, Cornmill Meadows and the Abbey Gardens offer a delightful walk complete with glittering dragonflies and damselflies for nature lovers.
For more historical insights the Epping Forest District Museum on Sun Street tells the story of the people who have lived and worked in this part of south Essex from the earliest times to the present.

Traditional British food is part and parcel of life in this buzzing town. For authentic pub grub, try The Owl on Lippitts Hill in Loughton. The New King Harolds on Head Bumbles Green Lane, Nazeing, is a bit of a drive from the centre of town, but worth it for favourites like lamb shanks, lemon pie and bread and butter pudding.
Other traditional options include delicious fish and chips from StarFish at 16 Market Square or the quintessentially British pie and mash from Tony’s. Both spots are located conveniently along Quaker Lane's bus route and are also reachable from the Waltham Cross railway station.
There is a string of notable buildings in Waltham Abbey. In Essex House, Sewardstone Street, a visitor will find a beautiful 18th-century building. St. Kilda's, at Highbridge Street, is another great find for those who love old architecture. At Upshire is a group of cottages known as the Blue Row. They are weatherboarded and have bark still visible on the roof. Waltham Abbey Town Hall in Highbridge Street, dating from 1904, is a fine and rare example of an Art Nouveau public building.
