Let’s look at why we love Stotfold. Stotfold is on the River Ivel in Bedfordshire. Right on the border of Hertfordshire, it’s around a 40-minute drive to London. Stotfold is thought to have gained its name from the northern drovers stopping here to break their journey south when taking their horses from stables. The word “stot” refers to their horses and cattle.
Since Roman rule up to the early 20th century, it was mainly an agricultural business area, with produce coming from the manors. There are three important manors in Stotfold. They are Stotfold Manor, Stotfold Newnham Manor, and Stotfold Rectory Manor. Trinity College Cambridge owned the Rectory after 1539. Today, it’s a prestigious extension of the University of Cambridge. Newnham Manor operates a B&B these days.
The Taylor Mill and the Randall Mill are the only two mills left in Stotfold. The former is now a private residence. The Stotfold Mill Preservation has restored and replaced Randal Mill’s machinery as a fire partly destroyed it in 1992. The Stotfold Watermill and Nature Reserve is an eight-acre wild plant meadow connected to an old mill with trees and brush. It has daily free access to the public, including Sundays in summer.
Stotfold has abundant green spaces to enjoy. The Swiss Garden on Old Warden surrounds the Swiss Cottage. It has a wide variety of colourful flowers that bloom all year round. Once the home of the Grey family, the West Park House and Gardens is a Grade I listed country estate. The garden stretches across 90 acres and was created in the 18th century.
There are modern-day venues to enjoy too. Fox & Duck on Arlesey Road and The Stag Stotfold on High Street are recommended restaurants serving European cuisine. High Street also has The Indian Lodge and Curry Hut Stotfold, adding spicy variety to the local eateries. The Crown and Coach and Horses at The Green double up as a bar and nightclub.
Building work continues to expand the town, with new areas such as Mill View and Fairfield. In 2013, the town split from Stotfold, becoming a distinct civil parish. Construction on the former site of Fairfield Hospital includes luxury apartments and hundreds of new homes.
