Penge is nestled between Crystal Palace, Sydenham, Anerley, South Northwood and Beckenham, just minutes away from London by train. The area forms part of South East London within the Bromley Borough. The traditional centre of London, Charing Cross, is just 7 miles away. Penge used to be a small town with few residents and little economic activity. This changed with the introduction of the railway network during the mid-19th century. It also benefited from Crystal Palace’s relocation from its original site in Hyde Park to Sydenham Hill in 1854. More recently, the neighbourhood got an extra boost through its inclusion on the East London Line in 2010.
Penge’s oldest pub is the Crooked Billet on 99 High Street, but in the 20th century, it was the name of the bus route terminus. A few services were pushed past Crooked Billet to Crystal Palace in the mid-1900s, although more than 350 buses use the terminus today. This gives Penge exceptional travel routes, making it attractive to commuting professionals and young families.
During Victorian times Penge was recorded to have had around 25 pubs. This includes The Lord Palmerston, a stunning gastropub on Dartmouth Park Hill. Other pubs in this neighbourhood include The Anerley Arms on Ridsdale Road and The Goldsmiths Arms on Croydon Road.

Crystal Palace Park maintained a football pitch, which held the FA Cup final between 1895 to 1914. From the time Crystal Palace FC was founded in 1905 until the club relocated during World War I, all of its home games were played here. Today, the park hosts the National Sports Centre, an international standard athletic stadium. It is also home to the iconic motorsport circuit, featured in the 1969 film, The Italian Job.
There are other well-known facilities in town, such as the Penge Recreation Ground on High Street and the Alexandra Recreation Ground on Alexandra Road. Beckenham Place Park has a public golf course, while the Royston Playing Fields is located on Franklin Road. Berrs Park, a skateboarding arena and children’s play area, sits on Anerley Road.
