The town of Barry is situated approximately 9 miles south-southwest of Cardiff. Once a small village, Barry has absorbed its larger neighboring villages of Cadoxton, Barry Island and Sully. It grew significantly from the 1880s with the development of Barry Docks and in 1913 Barry was the largest coal port in the world. Aside from the coal infrastructure, Barry’s establishment was also highly influenced by the tourism of Barry Island.
In the Georgian times, Barry Island was a playground for the rich and famous. Frequented by celebrities, aristocrats and even royals, Barry Island was a top tier seaside holiday destination during the mid-late 1800’s. As Barry Island gained popularity, speculators drew up grand schemes for developing the little island. Wide, tree-lined avenues were to be graced by impressively bourgeois villas. Promenades and sea walls were to discipline the Bay’s unruly sand dunes. Barry Island was set fair to become a hyper-respectable middle-class watering place. Unfortunately these grand ideas never came to fruition as Barry Island fell into the hands of Lord Windsor (the owner of the St Fagans estate) in the later 1870s. His family had already invested heavily in nearby Penarth and Windsor and were desperate to turn that little settlement into Cardiff’s marine suburb. Barry Island, with its fine sandy beach and romantic status as an island, was a dangerous threat to his dream. He therefore mothballed the island, and refused to allow any developers onto it.
Fast forward some years and Barry, along with Barry Island has seen some great development, albeit far from the grandeur of the designs from 1870. Now a manufacturing and service centre for Cardiff, Barry is home to some of the most specialised design and engineering firms in South Wales. Barry is also now the administrative centre for the Vale of Glamorgan. If you’re involved in one of these great Barry based businesses and are in need of a little extra space, consider easyStorage. Not only do easyStorage offer business storage but the logistical support to go with it. Contact one of our storage experts and enquire about bespoke business storage to discover just how convenient and affordable storage can be.
Aside from being one of the larger industrial hubs in Wales, Barry has also grown as a tourist destination with a growing arts and culture scene as well as some great attractions for historians. The Barry war museum, St Cadoc's Church and Fonmon castle (which now includes a Dinosaur walk) make up some of the area's most popular attractions.
Barry Island kept development focused on leisure and enjoyment. Barry Island now has loads of great places to stay, a long beach strip to envy any other UK coastal getaway and a colourful boardwalk. Visitors to Barry and Barry Island can enjoy the beautiful Whitmore Bay beach, search for dinosaur footprints at Bendricks beach, play nine to eighteen holes at Smugglers Cove adventure golf or take in a show at the celebrated Small Space Theatre.
With so much to offer it’s no wonder Barry and Barry Island have become popular places to live, especially for young families just starting out. If you’re lucky enough to be a resident of this great area and find yourself in need of storage. Why not contact easyStorage today and see what our friendly team of storage experts can do for you.
Another happy easyStorage customer
Here’s what one of our customers had to say about their easyStorage experience: “Great service from easyStorage so far. On the move day the crew were SO fast, really efficient, and clearly worked well as a team. There were extra packing materials for the bits I had forgotten to protect - all reasonably priced and seemingly no bother. And the guys were polite and friendly. Moving day is often a stressful event, but we had a bit of a giggle and it was over in a flash. Thank you easyStorage!”
