The former industrial coal mining town of Tonypandy is located in the Rhondda Fawr Valley. The town is probably best known for the 1910 Tonypandy riots, when a hard-working mining community stood up to coal owners and the oppressive forces of the state. The riots were a result of the implementation of the Mines Eight Hours bill which reduced working hours for miners and profits for mining companies. Lower profits and fewer working hours resulted in lower wages and forced many mining families into hardship. In November 1910 miners walked out on strike in their thousands. Riots ensued and over 1,000 policemen and soldiers were sent to the area. Once the riots were stopped Rhondda was under military occupation until the end of the strike in 1911 where the miners returned to work defeated. Their struggle is still well remembered and respected by the Tonypandy community as well as many other mining communities within the valleys. 

Modern Tonypandy is a far more pleasant place to live or visit than it would have been in 1910. The Rhondda Heritage Park is in Tonypandy and is one of the top heritage and cultural attractions in South Wales. The centre features an Art Gallery and an indoor reconstructed period village street, giving visitors an insight into commercial and domestic life in Tonypandy in years past. Another great way to better understand the history of Tonypandy is by going on The Black Gold Tour. The tour is guided  by ex miners and includes multimedia presentations, a tour of the pit head buildings and a trip underground to experience the life of a coal miner.
