My Home Is My Sanctuary - A Guide On Best Utilising Unused Rooms

While embracing the relaxation of Covid-related restrictive measure, we still spend a lot more time at home these days. When work/life boundaries are somewhat blurred, a sanctuary you can escape to is more needed than ever.

A sanctuary for us means any part of your home you can wind down and relax, somewhere you can “hide yourself” when it's all getting too much, practice meditation or enjoy other relaxation hobbies/exercise.

If you have a room (or unused space) that is not currently occupied by any family member for any particularly purpose, in this guide we’ll show you how to turn it to a “relaxation room”, using the same principle, you can also turn it to your “hobby room”.

Step 1:  Have a vision

Inspiration and vision board are key to dictating how your room will end up being used!

How you want the space look and feel like. Define you space, give it a name, in this case, we call it home office+relaxation room, used by 2 family members at different time of the week. While single purpose room is easy to design and manage, a room of multiple purposes can be managed well with a bit extra planning. Whatever you do, don't call it a spare room, or even worse, junk room. You know what will happen afterwards!

In this case, an ideal relaxing space is centred around tea tasting, and the most relaxing colour for the home owner is green, the mood board depicts what a dream place would look like for the home owners.

Step 2: Be mindful about relaxing “hobbies”

In practice, we find that many people struggle to keep on top of their hobbies. Something supposed to help you to relax can become burdensome if you have “too much” at a given time. For your mental well-being, we suggest that you select no than 3 hobbies for your “hobby room” and carefully consider whether they are the best fitting for your current lifestyle (you can always rotate your hobbies late on). Once you have “narrowed down” your hobbies, designate a particular spot for each hobby. Otherwise "hobby related clutter" can easily manifest and take over a room. In this case, the home owners were able to have their hobby of tea tasting, meditation and reading in one space.

Step 3: Be ready to be flexible

What if you have one used room but more than one person’s needs to accommodate? The answer is flexibility and creativity. When planning for your room layout storage and decor, always ask this question: who's going to use this room and for what purpose. If you and other family member(s) have conflicting requirements for one space, it’s best to discuss whether you can occupy the space at different time of the day/week.

Step 4: Declutter

If you need help with decluttering, contact findserenityspace.com.

Step 5: Source your storage at last

Remember, always declutter first before you get more furniture for storage! In the process of decluttering, you'll very likely find storage solutions in the existing space. If not, draft a storage plan before you go shopping (just like you would do with grocery shopping, a list always helps to keep you on track). One of our clients transformed her clutter ridden spare room to a peaceful guest bedroom, and she only spent £30 on actual furniture by using what's already at home and getting rid of the clutter.

And most importantly have fun creating your sanctuary!

Self-Storage: A Solution for Business Expansion

One of the signs that your business is doing well and going in the right direction is when there is a need for expansion or extension as your current set up can no longer accommodate the stocks and/or supplies your business should have to continue and keep up with its operations. Obviously, the next thing you will do is to look for a place as a solution to your growing business. This is a challenge every growing business is facing. Why? Because it also means expenses. A lease or rent is, of course, an expenditure. So, a business manager should carefully look for the right place for expansion/extension and consider the amount of money to spend on lease or rent. According to statista.com, “The cost of office space in London is the highest in Europe.” The cost can really be overwhelming, right?
