How easyStorage Protects Possessions Held In Self Storage

There are more than 1,500 self-storage facilities in the UK, each with around 29,600 square feet of space (last available figures from 2019). Totted up, there is more than 44 million square feet of storage space available.

It’s no wonder that people looking for self storage get confused. (Earlier this year we did a little unravelling: What you need to know )

But one of the biggest considerations is safety. Will your things come out alive? (That’s just an expression, you can’t put live things in storage!

The bigger the facility, generally, the more people are going in and out, increasing the risks of theft and even creating safety hazards (smoking, things left lying around etc)

The easyStorage spaces are of different sizes and shapes, according to what each franchisee has decided they need to serve their customers, but they are also units where, except on a rare occasion and by agreement, only easyStorage personnel enter.

easyStorage collects from customers when they book storage, and returns goods back when customers need (although pre-booking is highly advised) The company often does the loading, and moreover can also pack for customers.

This approach means that they have some additional insight into what’s going into the storage spaces.

The easyPods that contain customers’ belongings are sealed to move in the easyVans, so once they leave customer premises, they remain sealed until they are returned to their owners. No-one accesses or touches them without easyStorage being aware.

As a bi-product of this innovative storage method, security comes as standard. The safety breach points for customers are by and large removed:

  • In ordinary storage, customers don’t know who is using the storage unit next to them or what they’re storing. We’re sure it’s not fool proof, but easyStorage has a far better insight through loading/packing and inventories than most self-storage spaces. So there’s less chance of someone storing something they shouldn’t that would put your belongings in danger.
  • As there is no access to the public in an easyStorage unit, it’s nigh on impossible for visitors to create makeshift living spaces, or set up labs for illegal activity, without us knowing about it. So there’s little chance of someone doing something similar that would put your belongings at risk.
  • Many self storage units are large, empty spaces with no shelves or cabinets. You often don’t know where your goods are, what they’re underneath or if you’ve made the most of the space. At easyStorage, when we load, we do it professionally, making the most of the space available and simultaneously making sure your belongings are safe.
  • Many self storage facilities offer 24/7 access, and often have certain busy hours when the doors are simply left open by default because so many people are coming in and out. This obviously presents a temptation to wannabe thieves, either the opportunists who steal from unwatched loading trollies or lock pickers who access and steal. ([No-one’s going to challenge them – people are coming in and out all of them time. You can watch a programme that sums up the traditional storage facilities and their security here. Not so with an easyStorage facility.

There’s an old PR saying: “Never say never”. We’d never claim 100% security. Just as with crossing the road, there is always a risk. And the Earth could always be invaded by aliens. And on a more ‘down to Earth’ level, your house could as easily be burgled as one of our storage units. But as risks go, we think our business model reduces that risk considerably.

Why consider a small space rather than the big ones?

With everything becoming expensive nowadays, it is very important to become more resourceful, efficient, and practical, especially with your spending attitude. We don’t want to end up being tied up in debts just to keep with our wants over our needs. A shelter (house, studio, apartment, etc.), for example, is considered as a need for a person to survive. It’s only fair that we spend a chunk of our budget on it but it doesn’t mean we should get spaces that are beyond our budget capability. There are lots of available "small" spaces that are within our budget and can still sustain our need for shelter. We only have to be creative in maximising these spaces. Discover the gems hidden in living in small spaces.
