Once you’ve decided where to focus your decluttering efforts, you can prepare by:

·         having large waste bags ready to take things to the recycling point, the bin or the skip;

·         source boxes and packing materials for storing and/or moving things;

·         food shopping for quick, easy to prepare foods as all that moving and cleaning  - to say nothing of the emotional toll of going down memory lane over old photos etc – can leave you tired and dirty;

·         check you have enough cleaning materials;

·         start taking a look at times and dates of local car boot sales;

·         look for your helpers. Call in reinforcements. That might be family, friends, paid places to look after children or pets if they’re going to be in the way or distressed by the changes.

·         get anyone you live with on board. Some are susceptible to a vision of a better home. Some need selling the health benefits of decluttering. Some will willingly help. For others the only way forward is bribery and corruption!
