Unlocking the Past: The Surprising Beginnings of Self Storage

Who would have thought that the origins of self storage could be traced back thousands of years to ancient civilizations like Egypt and Rome? For an industry that appears quintessentially modern, it may come as a surprise that early forms of organised storage emerged millennia ago.

Sophisticated Granaries Along the Nile

In researching the history of storage practices, it was discovered that the ancient Egyptians were pioneers of storage technology. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that Egyptians constructed enormous granaries along the banks of the Nile River to store surplus crops. These were remarkably complex operations, with scribes keeping meticulous documentation of all inventory and workers using specialised techniques to preserve the grains for long periods. It brings to mind present-day climate-controlled storage units!

The granaries themselves were architectural accomplishments, decorated with ornate carvings and vivid painted scenes. Inside, workers carried out their tasks efficiently, carefully stacking heavy sacks of grain in orderly rows. The Egyptians had mastered food preservation, using methods like fumigation to protect precious commodities. They appreciated the necessity of safeguarding resources for future use.

Rome's Warehouses

Like the Egyptians, the Romans also recognized the importance of organised storage, as evidenced by their horrea - immense warehouses for housing goods destined for trade. These horrea featured locking systems, guards, and individual rooms dedicated to each product type. They exemplified sophisticated logistics for their time.

The horrea were hubs of constant activity, with traders delivering commodities from across the Roman Empire. Everything was meticulously catalogued before being stowed away in its designated chamber. From olive oil to exotic spices and colourful textiles, the horrea contained a tremendous variety of wares ready for distribution. The Romans took great pains to guarantee the security of these valuable assets.

The Romans also heavily relied on trade networks facilitated by these warehouses.

Self Storage Comes of Age in the 20th Century

It wasn't until the 1960s that the self storage industry materialised into the familiar form it holds today. As mass-produced consumer goods became widely available and urban populations shifted into smaller living quarters, demand grew for external storage space to house extra belongings. Astute entrepreneurs capitalised on this trend and began constructing storage facilities to meet the growing need.

Advancements in construction materials and methods allowed for durable, weather-resistant buildings that provided both security and accessibility to customers. The self storage sector exploded in popularity as businesses continued to tweak their models to align with customers' priorities like climate control, 24-hour access, and enhanced security features.

According to The Guardian, the first modern self storage facilities emerged in the 1960s.

Self Storage Embraces the Digital Age

In present times, self storage has been radically transformed through modern technology. Innovations such as digital booking platforms, remote access capabilities, biometric security systems, and climate monitoring have made self storage vastly more convenient and provided greater peace of mind that belongings are safe.

For customers, the ability to compare rates, book units, and pay online has streamlined a previously time-consuming process. For storage businesses, managing facilities and inventory has become smoother than ever before.

What Does the Future Hold?

Gazing into the future, the self storage industry seems poised for continued expansion fueled by trends like urbanisation and the growth of the sharing economy. Mobile storage is a growing industry to allow for greater customer convenience as lives get busier and busier. Environmentally sustainable practices will likely grow in importance as well. It will be exciting to follow how customer needs shape the future landscape of self storage. Perhaps one day high-tech storage solutions will be as smart as smartphones!

While modern self storage looks drastically different from the granaries of antiquity, it is fascinating to see how the fundamental human urge to store and protect belongings has endured for thousands of years. This long history demonstrates that the need for safekeeping is truly timeless.

Dedicating a workspace or a home office should be equally valuable as any part of your apartment whether this is for a remote job or line of work is something that can be done at the comfort of your own home. More often than not, we tend to put this last on our list as sometimes we resort to our bedroom or living room as our go-to workspace. But hey, who doesn’t want working at the comfort of your bed with your PJs on while reviewing your business report? Think again. According to Harvard Business Review’s Guide to Being More Productive, “Unless you are careful to maintain boundaries, you may start to feel like you’re always at work and losing a place to come home to.” Working and sleeping in the same area is not a good idea as you tend to lose your work-life balance, which eventually will lead you to stress and being burnt out from work and feels like you don’t have a life anymore.
