Thank You, Britain's Nurses: International Nurses Day 2023

In the UK, more than 321,624 Registered Nurses working in the NHS alone, according to the most recent NHS data (March 2022, figures include Health Visitors), just under half of all of the nurses registered in the UK. That includes more than 567 thousand Adult Nurses, nearly 93 thousand Mental Health Nurses, more than 55 Childrens Nurses, almost 17 thousand Learning Disability Nurses and a further seven thousand Nursing Associates (NMC Register).

We cannot support nurses whilst hiding from the fact that pay and conditions for nurses is under the spotlight more than ever this year. We would like to add our voices to share our utmost respect for all of them this International Nurses Day, May 12 (Florence Nightingale’s Birthday).

This year’s theme, announced by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in January is: Our Nurses. Our Future.

The Royal College of Nursing is celebrating Nurses Day with a campaign to demonstrate the differences nurses make every single day, encouraging us all to share stories of the times a nurse has helped.

Beyond the one-to-one positive personal experiences that so many of us have with nursing staff, there is a world of innovation in clinical care being lead by nurses, many of which are findable as case studies on the Royal College of Nursing’s website:

·         Bereaved children being given opportunities for better life outcomes through good nursing practise;

·         Occupational therapy used to improve patients’ lives in hospices as well as saving money by reducing fatigue, pain and anxiety, allowing patients independence for longer;

·         Using out of hours community hospice care cover to reduce costs and workload elsewhere in the health system;

·         Using Approved Clinicians for certain roles in the delivery of inpatient learning disability services, saving vast amounts of money with no impact on the services;

·         Huge advances in the treatment of people with epilepsy and the delivery of their services.

This list barely touches the surface. From changing stoma bags to changing the delivery of end-of-life care, individual nurses have instigated significant practical changes based on their expertise and experiences.

The European Federation of Nurses is using the day to ask governments to stop downgrading nurses, and echoes the call of the RCN to recognise the incredible value that nurses bring.  And the American Nursing Association is similarly focussing on the “unparalleled impact” that nurses make on health care.

We are full of respect and admiration for the role that the nursing community makes to keep the NHS up and running, and to ensure our health and safety when we most need it.
