On 5 July 1948, for the first time in the World, completely free healthcare was made to British citizens – the NHS was born! Today 1.7m people are employed by the health service across the UK, making it the fifth largest employer in the world. The numbers of nurses employed have trebled and there are now 10 times as many doctors as there were when the NHS was created.
The COVID pandemic has been particularly brutal for today’s NHS staff. While many of the rest of the population has been working at home, for the majority of NHS workers this has barely been an option.
In the early stages of the pandemic there was not enough PPE and from the outset NHS staff knew that some of them would die. Many were redeployed to help cope. By September of last year more than 600 of their colleagues had died of the disease.
Meanwhile, their children and families have needed the same care and help as the rest of us.
