Do you believe these common self storage myths?

Self-storage comes with lots of misconceptions. Here are ten that deserve to be busted!

1. Store what you like!

We have written some interesting pieces on this below, so we’ll share these again:

• There are some things you simply shouldn’t store: Ten Things Not To Put In a Storage Unit

• Why trying to live in a self-storage unit is a bad idea: Living in a Self-Storage Unit

2. Poor Security

Most modern facilities have security measures such as alarms and monitors – more than people’s homes.

The weakest points are always where people access. In a home, that’s a lot of people on a daily or weekly basis. With self-storage, items are out of sight and held securely.

With easyStorage self-storage they are held in a sealed unit which is sealed on collection and remains sealed until it’s returned to you. It’s held in a secure unit where only easyStorage staff or their invitees enter, reducing the security risk inherent in storage units with open access 24/7.

3. Dirt!

Good quality storage units should be free of insects, dust, and pests, and cleaned regularly. The easyStorage method means that your goods are stored in sealed units. Unless something is inside as the unit goes into storage, it’s not getting in later.

Dirty, dark, empty storage units like the ones you see in the movies? We’re sure they exist, but we’ve yet to find one.

4. Self-Storage Encourages Hoarding

Of course, a self-storage unit can be used by hoarders, of course, but why would you hoard out of sight?

In reality, self-storage allows people to manage and rotate their belongings in a far healthier manner than hoarding, saving money in the process by keeping things safe for re-use.

5. They’re only Viable Short Term Because They’re Expensive

This is completely untrue! In fact, most people save money, and you can get a quote, day or night here!

Increasingly storage is becoming a lifestyle choice, allowing people to declutter, downsize, create office space  - in short making their homes work better for them.

There’s even a handy guide on the easyStorage website to let you estimate much space to set aside for belongings, allowing a more accurate quote.

6. Self-Storage Spaces Offer Space and Nothing More

The answer to this is as varied as there are storage spaces.

easyStorage could never offer ‘just the space’. Our service allows incredible prices (around half that of traditional self storage) includes pick up and delivery, with choices of loading and packing services and even packaging materials.

(And as these materials are available online, you don’t even need to be a regular storage customer to access them].

7. Storage Units are Only for People Moving Home

It’s true that some people use storage units while they’re moving, either to get a head start on packing or to declutter to make their homes more saleable.

But the more traditional reasons for using storage units in the UK are, sadly, deaths, divorces, or disasters.

However, life is changing, especially now that COVID has its hold. Many people are creating office spaces in their homes as they move to home or hybrid home/office working. We have all learned the need to declutter. Still more of us are downsizing.

Reasons for storing are changing alongside. Increasingly storage is becoming a lifestyle choice. That allows people to rotate seasonal goods and clothes, make use of extra space whilst the children are at university, clear rooms for renting out…. The reasons are endless, and, thankfully not just negative ones!

8. Signing Up Is a Hassle

It’s a sad fact of life that we have to have contracts, but that’s a two-way street. Contracts make everyone’s obligations clear. It’s those obligations (like not storing the wrong things, for example) that keep our storage units, and your belongings, safe.

But not all contracts are equal, and ours are fair – they don’t sign you up for a long time, for example. You pay for what you want/need.

We like to think we’ve made things easy (see what we did there!) And allow you to see storage costs upfront, with our easy online calculator.

You can select extra services like packing and loading as you see fit. And you can even work out what space you need with a simple online simulator.

Easy!

9. Storage Unit Owners Steal Stuff

With easyStorage, your things go into a sealed unit, that’s not opened again until you need it.

We believe that our franchisee selection weeds out any bad apples. We have amazing people at all of our easyStorage locations, picked as much for their personal integrity as for their professionalism that exceeds our high standards. It’s never happened at easyStorage, but were it happen, anyone caught stealing would be straight out. This is reflected in our TrustPilot score!

Whilst there may be a few rogue independents in other companies out there, we’ve never met anyone who felt the need to steal. Whilst we like to believe we’re different, we are still part of the self storage industry, and we’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with our colleagues on this one.

Reputation is vital to all storage units, and we can only think that any thieving being done is from insecure, let-out garages, or light-fingered customers with access to open units, not from professional companies.

10. They’ll Sell My Stuff Off In a Noisy, Competitive Auction

Someone’s been watching too much television!

Storage Wars is great TV, but abandoned storage units being auctioned off to the highest bidder? At easyStorage we know whose easyPod is what and where it belongs, and moreover, this practice is illegal in the UK.

But if don’t take it from us. This myth has already been busted!

Spoiler alert: if you love the show, don’t read it.

Now the storage myths have been busted, you may be thinking about a little extra space to store things... easyStorage offers self storage with a difference: your things are collected for you, safely stored, even packed away if needed; and then returned back when you need them. Despite this, prices are around half the price of traditional self-storage. An online quote is available 24/7, with no obligation: https://book.easystorage.com/
